2025: Advancing Digital Trust Beyond Borders
2025 was a year of endings and beginnings for SK ID Solutions.
We closed a significant chapter in our history by ending the issuance of Estonian ID-card certificates. This well-planned transition concluded a 24-year chapter during which we issued a total of 15 million ID-card certificates. The Estonian ID-card remains the backbone of the national e-ecosystem, and we are proud to have helped lay the groundwork for others to take over.
Yet the same year opened up also brand-new chapters. We entered Finland’s market by acquiring digital signature service that was provided by Telia, and rebranded it as Allekirjoitus.fi. This strategic move strengthens our position in the European digital signature market and complements our existing identity solutions with a signing platform.
We signed a strategic partnership with Armenia’s identity provider imID to licence our Smart-ID technology. Developed in Estonia and proven in the Baltics with millions of users and almost a 100 million of transactions each month, this technology was adopted by Armenia to build a secure digital identity solution tailored to their market.
While our team grew to a hundred specialists, we welcomed new country managers in Latvia and Lithuania, and also strengthened our presence in Belgium with a permanent local sales representative, where Smart-ID’s eID scheme has been formally assessed at the high assurance level, matching the status it holds in all three Baltic states.
In response to growing digital fraud threats, we reinforced our security architecture with Smart-ID+. By shifting to brand new authentication flows, QR codes now directly link transactions to the user’s Smart-ID app, making phishing attacks more difficult. The end-users no longer need to enter personal codes or compare verification codes. However, this requires banks and e-service providers to update their systems. We called on all e-service teams to begin testing and implementing the new API in 2025, preparing their platforms for a smooth transition as Smart-ID+ rolls out to users throughout 2026.
We also expanded Authentigate, our simplified authentication gateway that consolidates Smart-ID, Mobile-ID, Estonian ID card, and eParaksts into a single integration point, as more e-services adopted the platform throughout 2025. Authentigate allows e-services to verify user identity without collecting unnecessary personal information.
Smart-ID became an official e-voting identification method for Estonia’s 2025 local government council elections, joining Mobile-ID and state-issued ID card as trusted verification options. This high recognition from the Estonian state affirmed the security and reliability of Smart-ID and extended SK ID Solutions’ role in powering Estonia’s democratic processes.
Smart-ID was recognized as the most customer-friendly mobile application in Estonia according to a Kantar Emor survey, surpassing global platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
In another nation-wide survey, Smart-ID ranked third among Estonia’s most beloved brands outranking Apple, Google, and Samsung. In Latvia and Lithuania, Smart-ID reinforced its market leadership: Latvia’s most-loved brands survey confirmed Smart-ID’s strong brand recognition. Smart-ID also secured a solid place in Lithuania’s TOP 20 most-loved brands.
In Latvia, SK ID Solutions, together with Datorium, carried out the “Your Digital Self” survey, revealing that while Latvian teenagers are highly active users of digital services and authentication tools, their everyday security habits still lag behind their theoretical knowledge.
To promote secure AI usage across the sector, we partnered with the Estonian ICT Association and led a cybersecurity campaign examining how small and medium-sized enterprises safely integrate AI into their operations.
For the sixth consecutive year we were recognized as an AAA credit-rated company. SK also earned recognition as a leading ICT company, ranking 13th in Estonia’s 2025 competitiveness ranking, reflecting our operational efficiency and competitive strength in the digital services sector.
In November, we hosted our 15th Annual Conference in Tallinn, gathering almost a thousand industry professionals to explore how digital identity, security, and governance have evolved and will evolve. We continued our tradition in Latvia by hosting the “Smart-ID Developers’ Breakfast” event, where we shared the latest insights on Smart-ID+ and developments from the industry with our valued clients.
