New Standard for Security and User Experience

The new Smart-ID+ introduces a range of technical improvements that directly address the latest security threats and streamline the authentication and signing processes for all e-service providers. By shifting to device link-based authentication flows, the new API tightly binds each authentication session to the user’s Smart-ID app, making phishing, man-in-the-middle, and replay attacks far more difficult. This update also brings stronger cryptographic protections and several usability enhancements, ensuring your e-service remains compliant with modern security requirements while making the login and signing experience smoother for end users. The existing push notification-based flow will continue to be supported alongside the new flows, so you can adopt the latest features without disrupting your current integration.

• Enhanced Security. QR codes strengthen protection against phishing and Man-in-the-Middle attacks. These methods directly link transactions to the user’s Smart-ID app and reduce fraud attempts.
• Future-Proof Cryptography: SHA-3 and RSASSA-PSS support meets modern standards such as NIST, eIDAS, and FIPS 186-5, offering strong protection against new types of threats.
• Improved Usability: With Smart-ID+ QR codes and App2App flows, your customers can log in quickly without entering their personal codes or comparing verification codes. iOS users benefit also from a smoother experience, as the App2App flow automatically returns them to the original app after authentication.

Migration Options and Authentigate as an Alternative

If your e-service only requires user authentication and not digital signing, you can also consider the new Authentigate service, which offers a single, efficient integration point for Smart-ID, Mobile-ID, and Estonian ID card authentication across the Baltics and Belgium.
