Estonia puts focus on smart device security

A new project to promote the safe use of smart devices and the development of secure mobile e-services has been hailed as an opportunity to set an example to the world.

President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves said the Nutikaitse 2017 initiative was an example of co-operation across digital society.

He said, “Estonia is one of the leading countries in the world for e-services and developments but the rapid changes which cyber society is bringing come with their own challenges and risks. By becoming the country with the most secure information society we can set an example. This is our chance.”

The agreement was signed on 5 November 2013 by Certification Centre, the Estonian Information Systems Authority, Swedbank, SEB, TeliaSonera, EMT, Elisa and Tele2. The project co-ordinator is Look@World Foundation.

The overall aim of Nutikaitse 2017 is to raise security awareness among mobile smart device users, developers and retailers. The project will promote the safe use of mobile smart devices and also aims to ensure that secure software solutions are easily accessible and user-friendly.

The goal of the project is to ensure that 70% of mobile smart device owners in Estonia use their devices in a secure way by the end of 2017. With the help of Nutikaitse 2017, at least 300,000 people in Estonia will use the secure Mobile-ID for electronic authentification and digital signatures. The vision is also that 80% of Estonian e-service providers, developers and Estonian Association of Information and Technology members will have joined the initiative.

People in Estonia are heavy internet users. Some 78.4% of 16-74 year olds use the internet and 75% of households have internet access (September 2012.) There is also a clear pattern of increasing mobile smart device use. A study by GfK Retail and Technology showed that from July-September 2013, 62.45% of all phones sold were smartphones. The project aims to ensure that security awareness keeps up with the latest trends.
